However, technology works better when combined with human touch, one expert argues.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Telehealth, in particular, boomed during the pandemic, and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcarefinancenews.com\/news\/most-consumers-want-keep-telehealth-after-covid-19-pandemic#:~:text=Almost%252088%2525%2520of%2520Americans%2520want%2cafter%2520COVID%252D19%2520has%2520passed.&amp;text=Before%2520the%2520COVID%252D19%2520pandemic%2ca%2520novelty%2520than%2520a%2520necessity.&amp;text=By%2520March%2520of%2520this%2520year%2chad%2520unde\">\u00a088% of Americans<\/a>\u00a0favor using telehealth now, with<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiercehealthcare.com\/payer\/cvs-study-how-pandemic-boosting-healthcare-consumerism\">\u00a075% seeing digital solutions<\/a>\u00a0as essential to care. However, Joel Landau, founder and chairman of The Allure Group, a long-term and memory care provider in Brooklyn, NY,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.providermagazine.com\/Articles\/Pages\/Human-Touch-and-Health-Care-Technology-Work-Best-Together.aspx\">writes in<em>\u00a0Provider<\/em>\u00a0magazine that<\/a>\u00a0since humans are social creatures and crave physical touch, technology works best when combined with human interaction.<\/p>\n<p>By focusing on the human element, senior living operators and healthcare providers can ward off the negative effects of virtual interactions, like loneliness and depression, Landau writes.<\/p>\n<p>Technology use can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcknightsseniorliving.com\/home\/news\/tech-daily-news\/tech-use-can-lead-to-depression-in-older-adults-study-says\/\">lead to depression in older adults<\/a>, according to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/news\/2023-04-link-tech-anxiety-depression-older.html\">Harvard Medical School researchers at Brigham and Women\u2019s Hospital study<\/a>. The study found interactions that used emails and video calls were associated with feelings of depression and anxiety in older adults, while in-person interactions with friends, family and healthcare providers were associated with fewer mental health issues.<\/p>\n<p>There are three major benefits to combining technology with sustained physical interaction with patients, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.providermagazine.com\/Articles\/Pages\/Human-Touch-and-Health-Care-Technology-Work-Best-Together.aspx\">Landau notes<\/a>. The first is the healing power of human touch, because, as people get older, massage therapy can decrease heart rate, blood pressure, and cortisol levels, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0273229711000025#s0115\">a study<\/a>\u00a0by the Touch Research Institute in ScienceDirect. Secondly, human touch increases patient-doctor confidence, and when healthcare providers demonstrate empathy and compassion, it<a href=\"https:\/\/stanfordmedicine25.stanford.edu\/blog\/archive\/2018\/patientperspective.html\">\u00a0improves patient satisfaction<\/a>\u00a0and can lead to better health outcomes. Thirdly, no matter how accurately technology can predict disease or perform care,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2019\/10\/ai-can-outperform-doctors-so-why-dont-patients-trust-it\">patients still trust human providers more<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So, how can senior living and healthcare operators best combine technology and human touch?
